A backsplash is the most visible tile in a kitchen and usually the smallest area, which makes it the easiest place to either get the character of a Palm Springs house right or quietly undo it. Choosing Tile That Fits the House

Modernist kitchens from the late 1950s and 1960s tended toward simple, honest materials. Square ceramic field tile in a straight grid, small glass or ceramic mosaic, a single strong color run behind the range, sometimes a glazed tile with visible variation from piece to piece. Those choices still look right in those houses. So do some modern ones, like a large porcelain slab or a long narrow tile laid in a vertical stack, because they share the same restraint.

What tends to look wrong is a pattern borrowed from another style entirely. Heavily figured cement tile, ornate medallions and very glossy beveled subway tile can be lovely somewhere else. Behind a counter under a clerestory window in a post-and-beam house, they usually read as a later owner’s remodel. We bring physical samples to the house and hold them against the wall in the light you actually have, because desert sun coming through a glass wall changes how a glaze looks more than any showroom does.

Layout Before Thinset

Every backsplash we install gets laid out dry on the counter first. That shows you the pattern, but it also answers the practical questions that make the difference between a clean wall and a messy one:

• Where the grid starts, so you do not end up with a thin sliver of tile at a visible corner or under a window.
• How the tile meets each outlet box and switch, and whether a box needs an extender so the cover plate sits flush on the finished surface.
• Where the tile stops, whether that is at the underside of the upper cabinets, at the hood, at a window casing or at a clean line on an open wall.
• How the tile finishes at an exposed edge, with a bullnose, a metal edge profile or a factory finished edge.

You approve that layout before anything is mixed.

Setting and Grouting for Desert Conditions

The wall gets checked for flatness and cleaned of old adhesive or paint that would weaken the bond. Glass mosaic needs a white thinset rated for glass, because gray thinset shows through and changes the color of the tile. Heavier handmade tile gets back buttered so every piece is fully supported.

Heat is a real factor in Palm Springs. Thinset loses working time quickly when it is hot, so in summer we set tile with the house closed up and the air conditioning running, and we keep all setting materials inside rather than in a truck.

Grout is where hard Coachella Valley water shows up first. Light cement grout near the faucet picks up a white mineral film within months. For the area around the sink we generally recommend epoxy or a high performance grout, in a mid tone that forgives a little scale, and we explain how to keep it clean with a dry cloth rather than harsh cleaners.

Regrouting Instead of Replacing

If your existing backsplash tile is sound and you mostly dislike the grout, a regrout is worth considering. We rake out the old grout, clean the joints and regrout in a new color. On a period tile you like, that can change the whole wall for a small part of the price of new tile.
