Tile People Who Remodel Kitchens

Telescopecards is a Palm Springs kitchen remodeling contractor, and if you ask us what we care about most, the answer is the tile. Backsplashes, kitchen floors and the terrazzo that turns up under old carpet in houses from the 1950s and 1960s. We still handle the rest of a kitchen, from cabinets and counters to lighting and sink relocations, but we plan those around the surfaces rather than treating tile as the last line item.

That focus came from the houses themselves. Palm Springs has a remarkable stock of modernist homes, with post-and-beam framing, clerestory windows and glass walls that open the kitchen straight onto the patio. Kitchens in those houses are small parts of a very deliberate design. When a remodel ignores that and installs whatever is trending, the room looks out of place for as long as the owner lives there.

How We Work

We visit the house before we talk about products. We look at the architecture, the light, the floor under your feet and the water stains around your faucet, because each of those narrows down the materials that will look right and hold up. Then we bring samples, not catalog pages, and hold them against your own walls.

Before tile goes on a wall, we lay it out dry on the counter so you can see the pattern and the cuts. Before a floor goes down, we check the slab for flatness and cracks, and if there is old vinyl tile or black adhesive we recommend an asbestos test before it is disturbed. In summer we set tile inside with the air conditioning on and schedule noisy, door-open work for early mornings.

What We Will Tell You

Sometimes the right answer is smaller than you expected. A regrout can rescue a backsplash. An original terrazzo floor can often be polished instead of covered. We would rather tell you that than sell you a job you do not need.
